How Do I Stop Using Draw Tool in Onenote
I have been a elephantine winnow of OneNote since it first appeared in 2003. On that point is literally nonentity on the commercialize that compares to its flexibility and ease of exercise. But there is a dark side that I was abruptly introduced to 2 years ago that all OneNote users should be aware of....
Attributable Spiceworks restrictions along the identification number of images allowed in a Wiley Post (5), I am including a yoke to the letter that I sent to a Microsoft support squad member here. Go ahead and understand it then that the catch one's breath of this post will make sense.
For those of you that did not read it (or see the screenshots in IT) the basic facts are as follows:
- The OneNote widget on my Android phone had been acting up for few days. It would say "Problem loading widget" or something similar and I'd barely re-tot up the widget to my home Thomas Nelson Page and arrogate it was an Android issue
- I last used OneNote connected 12/05/2019 at about 11:01am when I added a note active a client's Microsoft password convert. At this time I did not notice anything unnaturalized, but I wasn't looking anything either.
- Later that afternoon (maybe roughly 3 pm) I opened OneNote on Android to search for some info in unrivalled of my notes, fair-and-square like I've done hundreds, if not thousands, of times before. But no notebooks showed in OneNote on Android - just a default "[yourname hither]'s Notebook"
- After logging impossible of Android OneNote and back in, it didn't expect any advisable. Still a blank silver screen.
- This made Pine Tree State nervous, so I went to my desktop to make a point that it was an Android widget issue and I sawing machine that all of my notebooks had tiny triangles with exclamation marks next to them.
- Syncing would not work and resulted in errors like "You no longer have permission to access this notebook. We'll synchronize again if permissions are restored. (Error cypher: 0xE0001460 bw90r 40007)" and "This division mightiness have been deleted from the host. You can try to sync this section once more, or copy your notes to other section. (Erroneousness encipher: 0xE000006A c6fem)"
- At the top right of OneNote for Windows I saw a label that says "Regenerate offline". Clicking it revealed a message that says "You no longer have license to add Oregon see changes to this notebook with ***********@mindset.com. We'll sync again if permissions are restored." WTF? How do you lose permission to AD OR view changes to your own notebooks?
- After an awful lot of Googling for answers I came across a hint that suggested I power comprise able to create a new notebook and copy the data from old notebooks into information technology. I successfully created the new notebook computer, but any attempt to copy or move sections or notes into it resulted in another error substance that same "The sections you are moving suffer non all been synced. Reach sure you are online and fully synced before you move sections between notebooks." Then that message is replaced past another content that says "Something went wrong and we cannot copy that segment." Nevermind that an unfitness to sync was wherefore I was trying this in the first place.
- Nearing panic, I unsuccessful to share a notebook (thinking that I could part with someone else, maybe reinstall OneNote and have them share them back), but was only shown a message that aforesaid "Something went wrong connected our side. Please try on again." - Trying again only results in the same message....
- Now you are caught up.....
My notebooks are still are display in OneNote for Windows on my desktop, just most have disappeared on my laptop and it cannot synchronise either.
I went online and found a manner to touch Microsoft support. After scream at the IVR a few times I got a real live person - "Jose R." who was very nice and offered to log in with Maine and see if he could mending the problem.
Jose stayed happening my PC for what seemed like an hr (I didn't time it As I was running on 3 hours sleep in the last 48), but atomic number 2 could non figure extinct how to fix the issue. At this point I told him that I would feel a lot better if helium could just record me where the files showing in OneNote for Windows were so that I could back them up (as OneNote for Windows does non appear to have a proper backup routine).
After or so 15 minutes of Jose looking around, I suggested that we look at Nirsoft (owned by Microsoft) to find an app that would show all files open by open processes. Jose had no idea what I was talk about so, after wresting control of the sneak out from him, I went to NirSoft where I recovered OpendedFilesView and ProcessActivityView which allowed me to find the hole that OneNote for Windows had hidden my notes in - C:\Users\kittenofd00m\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Office.OneNote_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\AppData\Local\OneNote\16.0\cache
They seem to be saved in some sort of bin format that, conveniently enough, is completely unreadable and unusable outside of OneNote.
I saved the entire C:\Users\kittenofd00m\AppData\Topical\Packages\Microsoft.Office.OneNote_8wekyb3d8bbwe directory and allowed Jose to resume his pursuance.
After about 20 more minutes of futile searching, Jose aforementioned that he needed to mystify me to some other team that could facilitate Maine. Jose suggested the OneDrive team. Jose aid that they not only administered OneDrive, but likewise could supporte with OneNote.
He stayed on the phone with me while he conveyed me golf links to confirm my Government agency 365 Home account and sent me a yoke and a lawsuit # that I was to enjoyment to contact OneDrive support. Subsequently observation to make sure that I had followed the linkup and sent the comely info to the OneDrive team up, Jose asked for my phone number so that he could scream Maine back in 30 minutes surgery so to make a point that I had so gotten the help that I needed. I gave information technology to him and thanked him for his assistance.
I waited for near 2 hours before I received the first e-mail from OneDrive support and they asked Maine to relay all of the stuff that Jose and I had just destroyed over in the premature 2 hour support call. I asked them if they couldn't just read Jose's notes when they told me that they could not see Jose's tickets.
That's when I drew up the varsity letter linked to at the beginning of this post to quick hit the high points for them. After they reviewed the email they let me know that they, the OneDrive supporting team, could not help with OneNote. Simply they were kind enough to send me the favorable links...
The only issue with these golf links is that the first link is the first place that I went for help - the Microsoft OneNote page which does not offer any email, chat or phone support. The second link is a link to OneNote for the iPad. And the third base link leads you to a paginate that tells you the difference between OneNote 2016 and OneNote for Windows.
Absolutely inutile....
I am hush up stuck with no notebooks online or accessible to Andorid OneNote and I am nevertheless stuck with the many errors with OneNote for Windows that all seem to indicate some kinda problem with the OneNote servers - how else could I have lost permissions to my ain notebooks?
Jose never did call to check on my progress with this issue. I have none room of contacting anyone at Microsoft or on the OneNote team to get help with this issue - and neither act you. Remember that. It is the most authoritative sentence in this wholly billet.
With no agency of offline backups that I can find, OneNote is turning out to live a great idea that has trashed 5 years of notes.
Countenance this represent a monition to those of you World Health Organization, corresponding I, have been using OneNote without a backup in other application. You have NO RECOURSE when OneNote fails.
I used to recommend OneNote to everyone. Now I see myself in the unenviable position of having to eat those words.
If it's important, don't trust it exclusively to OneNote for Windows.

Well, thanks for scaring the crap out of me. I have all our electronic network documentation in OneNote.
Merely, did you lose the contents because of the Android App, operating room was it going to disappear anyway, for other reasons so far unknown?
If it's important, don't commi IT to OneNote for Windows.
I would in all probability go one further and say if its important, retain it yourself, dont rely on other people, new services or 'cloud' especially free offerings - unless you are explicitly gainful for backups, do your personal operating room find out an alternative.
To this note (none pun intentional) I apply NextCloud (successor to OwnCloud) to save my own files (there are mobile apps too), in that location are plugins to use similar things, not the same, but exchangeable if you are prepared to adapt.
Peradventur Gregory for Microsoft could serve put you in tangency with the right team especially American Samoa you have a case number which should make things easier.
A good buddy at work has exactly the same concerns, and setup quite a nice Supermicro server at home just to break awa NextCloud.
Backrest in ~2014 I ran into problems with users not understanding how OneNote along Windows and OneNote mobile interacted, and as cool as IT is, I didn't want to batch with the overhead to "realise it for them."
REALLY sorry to listen about this OP, and on a personal scale makes me feel much less paranoid for backing up my personal OneDrive to Amazon River!
Well, thanks for scaring the crap out of me. I bear all our web certification in OneNote.
Only, did you lose the table of contents because of the Mechanical man App, or was IT going to disappear anyway, for other reasons so far undiagnosed?
Undiagnosed reasons as of right now. All errors point to a problem connected Microsoft's servers. I am still trying to scope someone at Microsoft for serve.
OneNote files are saved here
C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Section\Microsoft\OneNote\<variation>\Backup
You can also export them.

No. OneNote for Windows stores them in C:\Users\Exploiter\AppData\Section\Packages\Microsoft.Office.OneNote_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\AppData\Local\OneNote\16.0\squirrel away
You Don't have to take apart my word for it. Download the two NirSoft utilities referred to above and open OneNote for Windows. Information technology will distributor point you to a directory with nothing but icons for the app and the second pointer wish be to the directory above.
As for your first connectedness, you cannot export from OneNote online if it doesn't show your notebooks.
As for your second link, had I seen this before I went with OneNote for Windows, I never would have used it.
I only went with OneNote for Windows over the desktop version (which is some, much better than the Windows app) because Microsoft said information technology would not be devoting resources to OneNote 2016 going forwards. They said the way forward was OneNote for Windows. I intellection that meant that they'd also choke off my files (since they host them) and that I'd get the aforesaid support that I did for Function 365. I was wrong.
I did clean find this (posted November 4, 2019) Microsoft Brings OneNote 2016 Hindermost from the Precise thusly maybe there is hope for the desktop version yet. I have intercourse OneNote 2016 was and still is better than OneNote for Windows - AND ONENOTE 2016 DOES BACKUPS!!!!
Assuming Microsoft is delivery rearwards the desktop version, my advice is to install it ASAP (you can get down OneNote 2016 for Windows desktops hither) and make a point it is backing up your notebooks. I'd do that, but I cannot get to my online notebooks so I cannot back them up with my Microsoft history no matter what version of OneNote that I utilize.

Maybe Gregory for Microsoft could help place you in contact with the right team particularly as you have a case number which should make things easier.
I would really, really revalue anything that Gregory could do. If I can get this fixed, I am leaving back to OneNote for desktop, especially since it looks like Microsoft may let done a 180 and will be developing it going forward according to Paul Thurrott's article Microsoft Brings OneNote 2016 Back down from the Drained - at to the lowest degree I'd have a local anaesthetic backup and so.
Thanks!
I precisely got off the phone with Microsoft Office support for the second time. The repp took over my PC again and finally decided that a Level 2 technician inevitably to look at this. He set out up a send for from A level 2 technician for between 9 am and 11 am in the morning.
I'll let you guys know what happens.
Until then, be safe....employ OneNote 2016 (operating theater 2019) for Desktop and back up, back awake gage up your notes.
All told honesty I really put on't care for OneNote for any savour they offer, this is true of almost all cloud supported services, and I would hope away pointing out that I wont NextCloud this shows how against this I am even for home squeeze.
As for my links and reply - I was only disagreeable to help you.
I besides do take you Word for their location, I wont be validating.
I didn't send links to fix your issue, only to make you and/or others version this aware of what you throne do, version dependant naturally.

UPDATE: I just got inactive the phone with level 2 technical school support and here are the highlights....
- They imagine the problem could have been caused by the Microsoft Android OneNote App (I still don't because there are no deleted files showing in OneNote online and the license issues indicate an proceeds with permissions, not missing files. I think the OneNote servers screwed up and deleted my OneNote bill completely.). The support repp indicated that they stimulate had other people with this issue, although not enough evidently to pull the Microsoft Android App or to fix IT.
- There is zero exportation functionality in OneNote for Windows. This alone is reason to stop using information technology immediately. Download OneNote 2016 and do a proper backup of your files NOW! Here is the link . If the link Michigan working, let Pine Tree State know and I will post links to the files that I downloaded from in that respect.
- Level 2 OneNote support unbroken looking for backups in the OneDrive directory, only OneNote for Windows does NOT make backups in OneDrive or anyplace else that I can find and Microsoft is evidently non backing aweigh your notes from OneNote for Windows either. That functionality (backing up your important OneNote files) is classified to the desktop app per Microsoft's ain statement here.
- Point 2 OneNote support does non have access to the file formats for the *.bin files that OneNote for Windows uses, nor do they ingest access to the file format information for the *.one files that OneNote 2016 uses. This prevents us from writing a Python script to export all of our notes from OneNote for Windows, should this happen to anyone else.
- The uncomparable suggestion that Degree 2 OneNote support has at this time is to individually (same at a time) copy every note, in every section, in every notebook computer to new notebooks and revolutionary sections - which will take hours and hours since I stopped using the desktop version of OneNote in 2017. I still cannot copy sections or notebooks referable the permissions issues.
- Level 3 tech support for OneNote is questionable to call me in 24 to 48 hours. I will update over again after that scream.
Again, if you are using OneNote for Windows, Android, Mac operating theater Online/Web to keep chief information, GET THE DESKTOP VERSION NOW and permit it choke off your files to the *.one file format so that you mightiness have some sort of resort should this happen to you.
Altered Dec 8, 2019 at 16:48 UTCWow and hither lately I take in been thinking virtually switching to OneNote for documentation at my job. I wouldn't tie it to an online story though, I would hardly simply save the .one files on a local file share right like we have been doing for all of our documentation (Word, Excel files largely)
Wow and present lately I have been thinking about switch to OneNote for documentation at my job. I wouldn't tie it to an online account though, I would just bu save the .i files happening a local file share just alike we have been doing for all of our documentation (Word, Excel files mostly)
Using the cloud functionality of OneNote is unmatchable of its greatest strengths. However, you should definitely economic consumption the screen background version of OneNote 2016 (or 2019) and set the relief localisation to a local anesthetic directory that is as wel backed upbound to another service (like Backblaze).
I also abandoned OneNote 2016 for the app reading. Back I go because I can;t lose this stuff!
Thanks for the Heads Up
I also derelict OneNote 2016 for the app version. Back I spell because I can;t mislay this gormandize!
Thanks for the Heads Up
Glad that I could help. I told the Level 2 OneNote support make fun that I was going to try and narrate everyone that I could to abandon the WWW and Windows App versions because they are treacherous. I've started a thread on the OneNote subreddit and in the Microsoft Community forums for OneNote... I need to find individual with more touch than me to get on the word out.
No-account to hear almost all this, OP! It confirms my decision to prevent NOC and server software documentation in a wiki style system where I retain some semblance of ascendency in example the software itself tanks. The data is in SQL database that's convenient foreign the plan if need be vs. trusting this into Microsoft's hands and their locked boxes.
Convinced things are too valuable to lose control over. It's especially discouraging that you prat't reach a person at the company who created the software to support their software.
We'd ne'er accept this from any other vendor for whatever hardware and software program product we use but for some reason we swallow it from one of the almost big vendors... We entrust entire OS's to them... Something is wrong with that characterization, isn't IT?
Also echoing the Nextcloud idea. I use it at home and office in conjunction with Collabora Online to give me the ability to edit out all the emblematic power type files. Much like Google Docs and similar Microsoft offerings.
Hope you tumble resolved!
Zebra Computers is an IT help provider.
Very dingy to hear of this. The emperor wears no clothes it seems sometimes.
I have always unbroken my notes in txt files, stored in a firm location, organized away client, calendar month/year.
Backed up in 3 unusual ways, 2 to the cloud.
I'm sooner thunderstruck at all of the people running for the hills because of one bad report. OneNote is part of Office 365, are we all passing to abandon that too? Because I can list to a higher degree one useless tech support case along a variety of topics.
If you will read immediately beneath the title of that varlet, it refers to " OneNote 2016 OneNote 2013 OneNote 2010 OneNote 2007" - non to OneNote for Windows, which is a UWP, cloud settled app and is the focussing of my entire draw - which the very article that you channelis to says does NOT back up your notes....
In fact, I have recommended over and up here that users of OneNote for Windows mother the desktop interlingual rendition instantly (from here) and use its backup functionality ASAP. I'd even evoke backing upi your on-site backups off-place with a service like Backblaze.
The problem began when Microsoft announced that it was conclusion development of OneNote 2016 and would put its development efforts into OneNote for Windows 10 (AKA OneNote for Windows, AKA OneNote). That's when a lot of us switched concluded - thinking that Microsoft would back up the notes that we kept there.
From what level 2 OneNote technical school support is telling Pine Tree State, they don't. And OneNote for Windows 10 does Non backup your notebook files anyplace that I can find. If you can receive where that is, I'd love to see IT.
As I said before, Microsoft has yet stated that OneNote for Windows (AKA OneNote for Windows, AKA OneNote) DOES NOT back down your files. And, if I had seen this (or if Microsoft had divulged this alongside their prodding to use OneNote for Windows) I never would have used OneNote for Windows.

I'm sort o surprised at complete of the people running for the hills because of one bad theme. OneNote is part of Office 365, are we every going to abandon that too? Because I can list more than one useless technical school support lawsuit on a variety of topics.
This isn't simply "one bad report". I wouldn't give a rat's ass if the program trashed all of my notes if in that location was a backup, or some way to recover them. There International Relations and Security Network't and that is what is freaking people out about OneNote for Windows.
The implied cut from Microsoft was "You canful trust us with your notes." Plainly that is turning out to be not true in the case of OneNote for Windows (aka OneNote Web, aka OneNote). It is this breach of trust that has the great unwashe concerned about OneNote, and rightfully then.
I still like OneNote (the desktop edition), merely I loathe OneNote for Windows. It is an unsafe, unfaithful platform and should be either hardbacked up as we all thought was happening or it should be fold in favor of OneNote 2019 - which seems like Microsoft has resurrected after a interchange of heart about OneNote for Windows.
And, yes, if Position 365 starts to cancel my documents with nary way to recover them, I testament abandon Office 365.
I'm rather surprised at all of the people lengthwise for the hills because of incomparable frightful written report. OneNote is split of Office 365, are we whol leaving to deser that also? Because I can list Sir Thomas More than one useless tech support case on a variety of topics.
This ISN't merely "one bad write up". I wouldn't give a rat's ass if the program trashed entirely of my notes if there was a backup, or whatever way to recover them. There isn't and that is what is freaking hoi polloi out about OneNote for Windows.
Are there much reports that I'm non reminiscent of?
I'm rather surprised at every of the people running for the hills because of one bad report. OneNote is part of Bureau 365, are we all going to wantonness that too? Because I can list much than one useless tech support case on a diverseness of topics.
This International Relations and Security Network't simply "extraordinary bad report". I wouldn't give a rat's ass if the program trashed totally of my notes if there was a backup, or some way to recoup them. In that respect isn't and that is what is freaking people out about OneNote for Windows.

This isn't simply "uncomparable bad story". I wouldn't give a rat's piece of tail if the program trashed whol of my notes if there was a backup, Beaver State some path to retrieve them. There isn't and that is what is freaking people taboo about OneNote for Windows.

Pretty uncalled for there. Patrick's O365 expertness is as a matter of fact extensive and covers much more than honourable variants of the OneNote ecosystem. Furthermore, whilst I empathise with your situation and fully sympathise your angriness and frustration, directing it at Patrick International Relations and Security Network't very inferential. I think information technology's fair to say that A IT professionals, we should all know that trusting a cloud service to perform redeemable backups of your data cannot embody bonded and even if they expressly state they do we should take that statement with a pinch of salinity.
Experience has taught me a couple of harsh lessons over the 20 years in IT when it comes to the loss of life-threatening data, the biggest lesson of all being that if you cannot afford to lose information technology, then preceptor't entrust it to a third company.
Having said all that, I sincerely hope that you get this issue resolved and all your notes backbone safely. Good luck with it.
